Renée Lévesque

Renée Lévesque

I have been working and studying Book Arts and book binding for the past seven years. My work varies considerably - from Artist Books to design binding, cartonnage and printmaking. I like to play with different structures, combining them with images in my Artist's books, mixing traditional bindings with modern materials.
I work with leather as well as metal, glass and wood. The book format is my medium and I strive to brake its boundaries and stretch it to the limits. Being a Book Artist also goes hand in hand with my paper artist side.
I make my own paper for certain project and also marble paper. I experiment with different paper making techniques, including papyrus and have developed a way to work with acrylic paint and inks for marbling on different sizes. I am always searching for new methods of decorating paper for my own work and for selling as well. I like to play with the paper to achieve special effects like burning, burnishing, cracling etc.- the same as one would do with wood. Those papers are also used to create my cards among others. I could say that I am passionate about paper and books but it realy goes beyond that.I am constantly looking for challenges and am always ready to try new materials to encompass with the old and traditional.
